Calving Preparations

Calving Preparations

We currently calve in both the fall and spring, so autumn is a busy time of the year for us. Between pulling yearlings off summer pasture (we typically take all our fall calves to grass), weaning calves and calving-out fall cows, there isn’t much “downtime”. Pregnancy checks on all our fall cows came in above 90%, and the calves weaned off heavier than in previous years. Hopefully, the same will hold true for their spring contemporaries, thus mitigating last year’s drought even more. As described throughout this newsletter, utilizing external resources and collecting internal information has made us better managers and has played a role in this mitigation effort.

Until next time! (Hopefully, it’s cool and wet!)
